Symtoms of Acid RefluxAcid reflux occurs when the acids pertaining to the stomach, enter the esophagus. The lower esophageal sphincter opens and closes in relation to the digestion process. However, when acid reflux occurs, it does not close properly leading to the rise of the stomach fluids up to the esophagus. When the stomach acids come in contact with the esophagus, a lot of pain can be experienced. Acid reflux can prove to be a serious condition and treatment should be taken immediately. Identifying the symtoms of acid reflux is very essential as it can lead to an early treatment.

Experiencing interstitial gas is one of the symtoms of acid reflux. Frequent burping or passing of gas can be an indication of acid reflux. People who are suffering with acid reflux also have a condition known as dyspepsia which refers to uneasiness in the stomach. Symtoms such as burping, pain in the upper abdomen, nausea and a feeling of fullness in the stomach are a part of dyspepsia which in turn could lead to acid reflux. Heartburn is also one of the symtoms of acid reflux.  During heartburn, a feeling of extreme pain can be felt in the chest area and can spread to the back and throat. This feeling can last for several hours and actions such as lying down or bending should be avoided as they can aggravate heartburn.

Regurgitation is also one of the typical symtoms of acid reflux. When stomach acids rise up to the throat, they leave an acidic taste in the mouth and also cause acute pain in the throat. This can lead to vomiting or burping and has to be treated immediately. Sore throat is also an indication of acid reflux and if one experiences a sore throat and acid reflux at the same time, then consultation with the doctor is a must.

People suffering from acid reflux face difficulty even when swallowing food. This is because of a feeling of all the food being stuck in the throat, which in real is not the case. A condition such as odynophagia, causes acute pain to a person when swallowing food is also one of the symtoms of acid reflux. At times, changes of a physical nature occur in the esophagus, which is referred to as Barrett’s Esophagus. It is a very serious condition and the person suffering from it needs extensive medical attention.

Even respiratory problems such as breathlessness, coughing, pneumonia are symtoms of acid reflux and they occur because of the presence of the stomach acids in the lungs. Recurring abdomen pain should also be examined by the doctor as it may be due to acid reflux. If the lining of the esophagus is damaged because of the stomach liquids, it may lead to ulcers which cause bleeding in the esophagus and require surgical treatment sometimes. Thus, these are some of symtoms of acid reflux and if any of these symtoms occur on a regular basis, then it could mean a possibility of suffering of acid reflux and consulting a doctor is required.
